5th International Scientific Congress on Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)

11–14 March 2026 | Budapest, Hungary

SMA Europe takes great pride in welcoming scientists and young researchers as well as clinicians, healthcare professionals, patient advocates, and representatives from around the world to attend the 5th International Scientific Congress on Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

Following the remarkable success of the 4th Congress in Ghent in 2024, which gathered one thousand participants from across the globe, SMA Europe once again brings together a vibrant and multidisciplinary community united by a shared mission — to advance scientific knowledge, strengthen collaboration, and improve the lives of people who live with SMA.

SMA Europe is a non-profit umbrella organisation of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) patient organisations from across Europe. Together, through greater understanding, we will create a better world for all those living with SMA.

United, at European level and in collaboration with all stakeholders, we achieve our vision of creating a better world for all those living with SMA. This is our reason for being, above all else. It infuses everything we do and is what we invite others to help us achieve.

All together. One goal.

A congress of many voices and many formats

The 2026 edition in Budapest will feature a diverse and interactive programme, including plenary sessions, workshops, poster presentations, industry symposia, and the Global SMAdvocacy Day event, which will unite everyone from all over the world. Together, participants will exchange insights, share experiences, and co-create innovative solutions to meet the ongoing challenges in SMA.

Additionally, for the first time, the SMA Europe Youth Group will take an active role in the Congress — contributing as reporters, and advocates. Their involvement reflects SMA Europe’s commitment to educating and empowering of young advocates, and ensuring that youth perspectives are embedded within the global SMA dialogue.

“The 5th SMA Europe Congress is where innovation meets collaboration. We are proud to unite outstanding scientists, clinicians, and patient representatives — including the next generation of youth advocates — under one roof. Together, we continue to shape the future of SMA research, care, and advocacy.” Dr. Nicole Gusset, CEO of SMA Europe.

Workshops: deepening dialogue across disciplines

On the opening day of the Congress, 11 March 2026, participants will be invited to take part in two dedicated workshop sessions, each offering six parallel workshops designed to encourage in-depth discussion, knowledge exchange, and practical reflection. Covering a wide range of topics across the SMA spectrum from fatigability, biomarkers, and neurodevelopmental considerations to respiratory and nutritional care, mobility, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the translation of fundamental research into patient journeys. The workshops will bring together clinicians, researchers, industry representatives, and people living with SMA in an interactive setting.

Late breaking news: showcasing the latest advances in SMA

To ensure the Congress reflects the most up-to-date developments in the field, the programme will include a Late Breaking News session on Saturday, 14 March 2026. This dedicated session will present the latest significant findings from clinical studies, real-world evidence, and fundamental and translational research that have not yet been presented in Europe at the time of the Congress.

Building on a legacy of collaboration

Building on the momentum of Ghent, the Budapest Congress will continue to bridge science and advocacy, expanding the dialogue between researchers, clinicians, and people living with SMA. Dr Yasemin Erbas, President of SMA Europe, highlights:

“Our fifth Congress will once again demonstrate how much can be achieved when science and community meet. This event is not only about sharing knowledge — it’s about connecting people, inspiring hope, and driving meaningful change for everyone affected by SMA.”

Empowering the next generation

The Congress will provide a platform for young researchers to present their work, exchange ideas, and will share their experiences and discuss future priorities for care and access.

By connecting scientific expertise with lived reality, the 5th Congress will continue to strengthen SMA Europe’s mission: turning knowledge into impact.
