Rare Autoimmune diseases occur when the body’s immune system attacks healthy cells, tissue and organs. Any part of the body
can be affected by them. More than 80 autoimmune conditions are currently known.1 These are chronic and diverse in their nature, and while some are more common, such as type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis, many are rare.
Autoimmune diseases share several clinical signs and symptoms, pathophysiological mechanisms, and environmental and genetic factors, indicating that they have a common origin.2 This theory is further supported by polyautoimmunity, which is the presence
of more than one autoimmune disease in a single patient. Polyautoimmunity has been described in most autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren’s disease and systemic sclerosis.
This edition explores the many challenges those in the RARE community face: it is clear that improvements need to be made in many areas, including education, research, treatments and care coordination. However, it also showcases some of the wonderful work many dedicated people are doing, individually and as part of organisations, to advocate for a better quality of life for those living with rare autoimmune diseases, and to ensure their journey is no longer a lonely one.
