Save the date: 1st International Clinical Care Symposium on spinal muscular atrophy.

SMA Europe takes great pride in launching its 1st International Clinical Care Symposium on Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), which will take place on 29th and 30th August 2025 at the Quark Hotel in Milan, Italy.
This first edition, titled “Medical Emergencies in SMA: pathophysiology, prevention, and response”, will address the aetiology and management of acute events that can lead to life-threatening emergencies in people living with SMA.
The Symposium will focus on the medical and supportive care needs faced by people living with SMA and their caregivers, which often extend beyond the scope of clinical treatments and require a multidisciplinary approach. Although standard-of-care guidelines for SMA provide essential frameworks for treatment and management, many needs remain unaddressed.
The Symposium will bring together an international group of multidisciplinary SMA clinical experts (including physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nutritionists, speech specialists) and researchers, along with patient advocates and industry representatives.
The scientific and clinical oversight of the Symposium is provided by a Medical Panel co-chaired by Prof. Dr. Stefania Corti — neurologist, full professor of neurology, and principal investigator of the Neural Stem Cell Lab at the University of Milan — and Prof. Dr. Valeria Sansone — clinical and scientific director of the NeMO Clinical Centre Milan and full professor of neurology at the Department of Biomedical Sciences for Health, University of Milan.
On the significance of the event, Prof. Corti remarks:
“This symposium is important because it addresses the critical gap in understanding and managing life-threatening medical emergencies specific to SMA, bringing together international multidisciplinary experts to develop better prevention strategies and emergency response protocols for this patient population.”
